The Inability for millions of people in the world, to a have access to clean drinking water is a major contributor to thousands of untold deaths each year, “At any given moment, about half of the world’s poor are suffering from water-related diseases, of which over 6,000 – mainly children – die each day by consuming unsafe drinking water.” While corporations buy waters supplies in developing nations and Governments are unable to secure and maintain stable water infrastructures there is an increasing need to secure a viable alternative to current water policies to provide the need to people. With continued pressure from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and other world organizations to privatize programs provided by governments, the continuation and subjugation of impoverished people persist in ever increasing and alarming rates.
Life Straw is an organization working to help solve world water resources for human consumption, “Sharing a passion to achieve the Millennium Development goal of ‘reducing by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water’ by the year 2015, we recognize the immense sense of urgency,” Life Straw has developed a product that would purify surface water for about one year at the cost of $2. With “approximately half of the world’s hospital beds [being] occupied by patients suffering from waterborne disease,” there is a real a necessity and importance to find a way to help provide viable, clean, safes drinking water for the world.
